The term shoes is oftentimes interchanged with the term footwear until it has been commonly established as an accessory that has a fairly stiff sole that do not extend too much above the ankle. Shoes are made in certain established styles and they can also be created in combinations or modifications of existing styles. The parts of a shoe that are referred to in describing styles include the quarters, the back and sides of a shoe; the vamp, the rest of the upper shoe including the toe; the tip, the separate toe piece; and the tongue, a flap extending up the instep that is often beneath a lace or a strap fastener. What follows are the basic shoe styles that can be seen in different retail stores.

Pumps are shoes that are cut low in front so as not to come over the instep. This is a popular style for women because men have generally abandoned the style. Straps are modifications of pumps with one or more strap fastener across the instep. These are worn by girls and women.
Sandals are shoes with straps that crisscross or interconnect in some manner. It is also commonly referred to as a woman’s shoe with an ankle strap. The basic types of sandals consist of a sole held to the foot by straps with or without a low heel. Thong sandals have a leather thong that rises from the sole between the first two toes and attaches to another strap. Sandals may also have closed toes and heels of any height.
Special design features popular in women’s shoes are the open toe and the open heel called the sling back. Shoes with thick soles, typically of wood, are called clogs.
